For those that were following my blog about my labrador puppy, I sadly was side tracked by the extra work of training her and the general chaos that is raising 4 children. We were just settling down and getting used to the idea of having a dog around, had our first holiday away with her to the seaside and started puppy training classes.
She had just turned 6 months old when one night she went out for a wee, came back inside, lay down on her side next to my son and made a wee on the carpet. We were surprised and a bit annoyed and my son moved her over but she didn't wake up. He said her tongue was lolling out.
I jumped up in a panic and rushed over to her, shaking her but she didn't move. Her eyes were open and I literally saw them glaze over. My husband was on the phone to the vet. We tried pumping her chest and blowing into her mouth but nothing. I picked her limp body and we rushed off to the vet but she confirmed what we already knew, our precious little labrador girl was gone.
I sobbed all the way there and all the way back and for 2 days after, along with my poor son and the rest of the family. It was such a total shock with her being so young. There were 2 students on duty when we took her in and they offered to do an autopsy to try and determine cause of death. The came back to us the next day saying they couldn't find anything wrong, it must have been a blood clot to the brain given that it happened so quickly and she showed no sign of illness or injury leading up to it.
A heartbreaking experience of having our first family dog but Lexie will always be remembered.
